Nude
The Kenny Gallery, Galway
July - August 2011
In association with:

For centuries the nude has fascinated artists. From the Venus of Willendorf through the statuary of classical Greece and Rome and on to the present we have sought to depict the human body, sometimes idealised, sometimes not so idealised... without clothes! Perhaps the lack of contemporaneous attire makes for a lasting statement - the unadorned human form having an accessible and resonant association for viewers.
The Kenny Gallery has invited a host of contemporary Irish artists to provide their take on the Human Form. For some it is their stock in trade - but for others it will be something of an artistic stretch, and the exhibition will be all the stronger for their required ingenuity.
Some of the almost 50 visual artists already confirmed to take part include John Behan, Brian Ballard, Katerzyna Gajewska, Mario Sughi, Dean Kelly, Jennifer Cunningham, Brian Ferran, Mike Absalom, Rory Breslin, John Coll, Marja van Kampen, James Hanley & Mia Funk.
Some work will be representational - while others may question themes of 'Nude vs Naked' in art; or indeed the use of the Nude for satirical purposes – as in 'those' Taoiseach paintings by Conor Casby which will feature in this exhibition, giving the audience a chance to see what all the fuss was about!
Expect classical, humorous, sombre, shocking, gentle, powerful and colourful works.
